How to Lower Your Electric Bill This Month: A Priority Checklist
If your electric bill jumped and you want something useful this month, start here. This checklist is ordered by leverage and effort for a typical US home on standard residential rates. Before you change anything: read the bill
Spend ten minutes on the actual statement (or your utility’s portal):
- Usage (kWh) for this period vs. the same month last year.
- Rate structure — flat rate, time-of-use (TOU), tiered, or demand charges.
- Delivery vs. generation fees (you often pay both).
- Seasonal drivers — cooling in summer, electric heat / heat pump strip heat in winter, holiday cooking, guests, new devices.
If usage barely moved but the total did, the culprit may be rates or fees — not a broken fridge. If usage spiked, hunt for loads.
